A Fool for Christ – Candlemas 2020

Yesterday was Candlemas, marking the bridge between Christmas and Easter. At a time when believing in Christian truths may seem foolish to many, we offer you this poem called ‘A Fool for Christ’.

Jesus was born in a hollowed-out cave,
Where the animals stirred at the new baby’s cries.
And the visitors calling to catch just a gaze
Of a Saviour born before humbling eyes.

Some, they brought gold to give to the Lamb,
Sweet smelling incense that stung their eyes.
One, he brought myrrh for the greatest ‘I am’,
To prepare for the tears a bereft mother cries.

Now the gold, it was spent in difficult days,
The incense was sent up to heavenly skies.
But the myrrh lay a-hidden beyond human gaze,
Awaiting in darkness to claim its dear prize.

Jesus was laid in a hollowed-out cave,
His body misshapen beyond recognised
His battle was finished, his spirit so brave,
But He saved to the end his greatest surprise.

At the turn of the morning as the earth shook with pain,
His body awakened by heavenly cries.
Over five hundred people got to see him again,
And death it was conquered and evil defied

Some women they witnessed that first Easter morn,
Now billions adore Him as King of their lives.
Though many still doubt Him and laugh Him to scorn,
I’m proud to proclaim I’m a fool for this Christ.
